Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), used in the wine industry as Wine Improvement Districts, are industry-led, self-funding mechanisms in which wineries vote to place a mandatory assessment on their own sales—such as 1% of direct-to-consumer revenue—to generate a dedicated budget managed by the wineries.
This model replaces the precarious reliance on voluntary dues and fundraising events, providing associations with the sustainable resources needed to execute professional marketing, unified branding campaigns, and educational initiatives that individual small-to-medium wineries often cannot afford on their own. These districts help wine regions by increasing visitation and sales through enhanced visibility, fostering a collaborative "one wine region" mindset that reduces internal competition, and ensuring that the funds generated are controlled by the industry rather than external destination marketing organizations.
Talk with fellow wine associations who are pursuing BIDs. Ask questions and share information.
